Biography

Degrees Held: John received his bachelor's degree from Augustana College in Rock island, Illinois and his Ph.D. degree from the University of lowa in 1961.

Other Experience: His non-academic experiences included collecting groundwater data in Kentucky, exploring for iron ore in Michigan and petroleum exploration in Montana and Louisiana. He did consulting in Pennsylvania and New York plus one assignment in Argentina.,

After six years of teaching at Monmouth College, he joined the geology faculty at Lawrence University (1968-1996). Most of his research focused on the Rocky Mountains and the Lake Superior region. He was selected a Fellow of the Geological Society of America in 1974 and served as President of t h e National Association of Geoscience Teachers. He published more than 40 articles and two books: Precambrian Geology of the North Snowy Block, Beartooth Mountains, Montana, and Wisconsin’s Door Peninsula - A Natural History.

His hobbies included hiking, biking and fishing along with being a follower of sports. He really loved golf. Scuba diving in the western Pacific and fly-fishing in Montana and Wyoming were treasured in his memories. Later in life he became interested in mindfulness and meditation. He also found much benefit in performing Tai Chi and Qi Gong. Palmquist valued his Swedish-American Lutheran heritage. The family belonged to Trinity Lutheran Church in Appleton (ELCA). He served as president to the church council and on the executive board of the Wisconsin-Upper Michigan Synod.
