Jude Kuenn – The Pottawatomie Light
Jude spent a week volunteering at the oldest lighthouse in Wisconsin, the Pottawatomie Lighthouse. The lighthouse is located on Rock Island in Door County, now part of Rock Island State Park.
The original lighthouse was first lit in 1836. The current lighthouse was lit in 1858. It was de-commissioned in 1946, when the light was light with battery power.
The lighthouse was restored by the non-profit organization Friends of Rock Island State Park, to reflect the furnishings and appearance of 1910. They run the tours daily from Memorial Day to Columbus Day.
Jude reviewed the keepers of the lighthouse and their lives on the island. Jude also spoke of Chester Thordarson’s impact on the preservation of Rock Island.
